It’s no longer the wave of the future because the future is now. Those old heavy bulky dust collecting computer monitors are fading away as more and more PC users are turning to LCD monitors. If you are considering that change, or just attempting to figure out what the heck they are all about, keep on reading!

Remember that old clunker of a computer monitor? Oh still have one? The ”old” CRT or Cathode Ray tube monitors are those giant boxes that take up the majority of your already limited desk space, get all hot and dusty so quickly and often are filled with kids finger prints from when they point out various items they want on EBay. Fading now into the woodwork, the CRTs are being replaced by the much clearer and much skinner LCD monitor. The LCD, which are usually less than three inches thick, weigh sometimes under a third of their much bulkier predecessor.

You might be wondering what this new fangled technology is all about. Well, LCD monitors are able to provide a clear image thanks to its five layers consisting of a backlight, two different layers of polarized glass, a ”mask” of those little dots known as pixels, and a wired grid. Confused yet? All this works together and when electrical currents pass through; a bit like all the planets aligning to form the image on your screen.

Shortly after the birth of this new technology, LCD monitors began to take over Notebooks and Laptops. As they grew up before our very eyes, the technology improved to a point where bigger and better screens could be put into use. The little LCD had made the transition to adulthood, becoming a fast growing, popular monitor for desktops and PCs. Today, LCDs are pretty much standard with the purchase of a new computer package while the old CRT is visualizing computer heaven.

It’s nearly impossible to find a reputable computer products company that does not carry LCD monitors. No matter what your favorite brand name chances are pretty darn good you will find their version of the new monitors. Companies such as Sony, Phillips, Samsung and Acer are among those offering affordable LCD monitors. As you begin your search for an LCD monitor it is good to know a couple of things. Be aware of which monitors will be compatible with your system and what brands you might be interested in searching.

Figuring out ahead of time the size you would like to invest in is another good pre-shopping step. Screen size is figured out by measuring the display area from lower corner to the opposite upper corner. Screen sizes range from about 17 inches to 30 inches. Once you get to some of the larger screens available you are also have the choice of your regular square screen versus a wide screen.

The best news in LCDs is that as popularity and common use has escalated, the prices have begun to come down a bit. Certainly the bigger and wider your choice the more you will pay, but even 30 inch widescreen LCDs are more reasonably priced. Monitors can be found for just a few hundred dollars, or less in some cases, to around a thousand dollars. Whatever you choice, you are likely to find something affordable to meet your needs.

High Tech is here to stay and it all only seems to be improving on a daily basis. LCD monitors are a part of that improved technology and a picture perfect way to upgrade your PC system.
