In 2004, Blockbuster unveiled an online DVD rental service called Total Access. You can get a Blockbuster Free Trial which will allow you to use this service for 2 weeks. Since I’ve used the Blockbuster Free Trial, I decided to take this opportunity to let you know about the service and what it offers.
Total Access is indeed an appropriate name for the service, since it allows you to access the stores as well as the DVD rental service. This means that you can get DVDs sent to you by mail, and also exchange those titles at stores, for one monthly fee. So in a sense, you get the best of both worlds.
You can choose from 3 different membership levels. Depending on the plan you choose, you can rent 1, 2, or 3 DVDs at a time. Much like Netflix, the DVDs you choose are mailed to you. Late fees do not exist, meaning you can keep the DVD as long as you desire. When you send them back, you receive the next DVDs on your list. Shipping is free.
Blockbuster, however, does offer an additional advantage not offered by Netflix. With Blockbuster’s Total Access, you can choose to exchange DVDs at one of the Blockbuster stores. The typical plan lets you perform up to five in-store exchanges per month.
I have used the service for many years, and on the whole, I am very satisfied. The DVDs are sent to you pretty fast, often within a few after you return your last DVD by mail. The online selection is better than what you would find in the stores. You will have no problem renting the popular releases. Once in a while, you may need to wait on the availability of a title if you are trying to get your hands on an obscure movie.
Many people don’t know which service to select between Blockbuster and Netflix. It might not matter if you are only planning to use the online DVD rental service, since both plans are similar (with almost identical pricing). Both offer free trials, so you can try the Blockbuster free trial and Netflix free trial and compare the services to see which one you like better.
