The movie Centurion is going to be in theaters in September and October this year, giving the Roman Centurion Costumes the possibility of more visibility than is normally the case. The people of the Roman Empire are both intriguing and well known, and the easily identifiable aspects of those characters makes it interesting when dressing up.
Even though there is more creativity possible when dressing up as a Gladiator, and a sheet and laurel wreath portray the immediately recognizable visage of a Roman Senator, the true heroes of the age were the Centurions of Rome’s powerful armed forces. Rome’s Legions enforced the legendary Pax Romana extending from Egypt to Britain, and although the bureaucracy of the Roman Empire kept everything going smoothly, it was still the Legions that gave it its power.
There are four main parts to making the costume look realistic. The first is the clothes, which includes the chest piece and knee length tunic. The immediately recognizable helmet with its feathers is crucial. Since one has to look the part from top to bottom, the distinctive Roman sandals are necessary. One cannot forget the sword and the shield. For authenticity they should be the Gladius, or Roman short sword, and a Scutum, or small round shield.
The costume can be made unique with further additions like a cape, different weapons, greaves to protect the shins, and armbands. A spear could also be carried around, but that would probably be dangerous.
This makes a wonderful choice as one part of a couple’s costume as well. With the man dressing as the Centurion, his partner has a choice of dressing up as one of the beautiful Roman ladies or as one of the wildly individual barbarians fighting the Romans. The movie trailer that is out now shows these options in an exciting visual fashion.
